Problem
You receive the following error in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager when configuring personal information management (PIM) settings: Unable to read application data Cause Summary of Causes This problem may be caused by any of the following: 1. The configuration files used for synchronization are corrupt. 2. The BlackBerry Desktop Software port speed configuration is too high for transmission to the BlackBerry device. 3. The hidden BlackBerry folder in the user?s mailbox has become corrupt. 4. The Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profile is set to use Local Cache Mode. 5. Data on the BlackBerry device has become corrupt. 6. There is a duplicate Microsoft Windows® Messaging Subsystem registry key. Intellisync is accessing the wrong Windows Messaging Subsystem for the MAPI information. 7. Missing Research In Motion folder. Cause 1 - Corrupt Configuration Files The configuration files used for synchronization are corrupt. Resolution Recreate the configuration files. 1. Close Desktop Manager. 2. Open Windows Explorer and delete the Research In Motion folder at: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\ If the Application Data folder does not appear, clickStart>Help and search the Windows help file for the topic To display hidden files and folders. 3. Open Desktop Manager and synchronize your BlackBerry device. Cause 2 - Port Speed Configuration is Too High The Desktop Manager port speed configuration is too high for transmission to the BlackBerry device. This cause only applies to serial port users; it does not apply to USB port users. Resolution Lower the port speed in Desktop Manager. 1. Open Desktop Manager. 2. On the Options menu, click Connection Settings. 3. From the Maximum Speed drop-down list, select a lower port speed. 4. Click OK. Cause 3 - Corrupt Hidden Folder The hidden BlackBerry folder in the user's mailbox has become corrupt. Resolution Recreate the hidden folders. 1. Ensure your mailbox is the default MAPI profile. 1. From your desktop, right-click on the Microsoft Outlook icon and select Properties. 2. Click Show Profiles. 3. If the drop-down list at the bottom of the window does not display the correct MAPI profile, select the correct profile. 4. Click Close. 2. Click Start>Run. 3. Type outlook.exe /cleanviews, and clickOK. 4. Click Start>Run. 5. Type outlook.exe /resetfolders, and clickOK. For additional information, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 296192 OL2002: Additional Command-Line Switches. Cause 4 - MAPI Set to Local Cache Mode If you are running Outlook 2003, the MAPI profile is set to use Local Cache Mode. Local Cache Mode is not fully supported by BlackBerry Desktop Software version 3.6 Service Pack 1 or earlier. For more information, see the Additional Information section at the bottom of this article. Resolution Disable the Local Cache Mode in Microsoft Outlook. 1. Open Outlook. 2. On the Tools menu, clickOptions. 3. Click the Mail Services tab. 4. Clear the Enable offline access check box, and click OK. 5. Restart Outlook. Cause 5 - BlackBerry device Data Corrupt Data on the BlackBerry device has become corrupt. Resolution Remove the corrupt data from the handheld database. 1. Connect the BlackBerry device to the personal computer using the cradle or Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable. 2. In Desktop Manager, double-click the Backup and Restore icon. 3. Click Advanced. 4. From the Handheld Databases list box, click the application database (for example, Calendar, Tasks) that you were configuring when the error message appeared. 5. Click Clear. 6. Click Close>Close. Cause 6 - Duplicate Registry Key There is a duplicate Windows Messaging Subsystem registry key on the personal computer. Intellisync is accessing the wrong Windows Messaging Subsystem for the MAPI information. Resolution Backup and delete any extra Windows Messaging Subsystem registry keys. Warning: Modifying the computer registry can cause substantial damage to the Microsoft Windows operating system. Document and back up the existing registry entries prior to implementing any changes. To perform this task: 1. Click Start>Run. 2. Type regedit, and then clickOK. The Registry Editor window appears. 3. On the Edit menu, clickFind. 4. In the Find what field, type Windows Messaging Subsystem. 5. On the Edit menu, click Find Next to determine how many Windows Messaging Subsystem folders exist within the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder. 6. Backup and delete any Windows Messaging Subsystem folders that appear in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder other than: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cur rent Version/Windows Messaging Subsystem To perform this task: 1. Select the Windows Messaging Subsystem folder you want to backup. 2. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File. 3. Browse to the location on your hard drive where you want to store the registry file. 4. In the File Name field, type a name for the registry file, and click Save. 5. Select the Windows Messaging Subsystem folder you want to delete, then press Delete. 7. Close the Registry Editor. 8. Close and re-open Desktop Manager. Intellisync will access the MAPI profile information from HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/Current Version/Windows Messaging Subsystem. Note: If this procedure does not resolve the problem, enable advanced logging for Intellisync and contact BlackBerry Technical Support for further investigation. For more information, see the Support Knowledge Base Article KB-01451. Cause 7 - Missing Research In Motion Folder The Research In Motion folder is missing from the following pathC:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\. The folder might have been deleted while troubleshooting a problem with the MAPI profile. Resolution Recreate the Research In Motion folder. 1. Close and re-open Desktop Manager. 2. Double-click the Intellisync icon and clickConfigure PIM. The Research In Motion folder is created automatically. 3. On the Handheld Configuration Screen, select theAddress Book application and clickChoose. 4. Select the correct translator and clickOptions. 5. Verify that the correct MAPI profile is selected. 6.
